We are working to increase the number of Parklets around the Borough to both discourage car ownership and give space back to the community.

What is a Parklet?

A Parklet is a car parking space that is converted into a community space for something more environment or community focused such as bike racks, seating areas, or green space. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, people are working from home, reducing their general travel, and choosing instead to enjoy their local environment. This has seen a rise in cycling and walking, and London needs to adapt to this change.

An increase in Parklets on our streets will result in increased active travel, a greater reduction in vehicle emissions, benefits to local businesses, and increased space that is there for the community to enjoy.

What are we doing?

Following our lobbying these community areas are now the focus of Camden’s Test & Learn Officer Group. We have been awarded the honour of delivering a Parklet prototype in order to develop and eventually launch the Camden Parklet Scheme in 2022.

We submitted for the parklet to be located on Antrim Road, Belsize Park, and have secured 50 signatures from the community in support of this. For Camden Clean Air the answer to improved air quality is 3-fold; less vehicle emissions through the promotion of active travel, focus on the local community, and increased green space. Our parklet proposal will therefore include all 3 of these features. Show your support by signing our Parklet Petition.

We are currently estimating the build to be around £10k and are looking for either one brand to pay for the the entire build or be part of a community build where the elements are provided by local businesses making this parklet built by and made for the Camden Community, supported by an empowering brand.
