The Camden Clean Air Initiative invites you to its first cycling event, The Camden Clean Air Cycle!
Encouraging active travel has always been important to us at Camden Clean Air, and due to lockdown, we saw a huge increase in the number of people taking up cycling. The Camden Clean Air Cycle is a bike ride for the whole community to take part in, regardless of your level, to celebrate cycling, cleaner air, and the Borough of Camden.
Sunday 30 May
The Camden Clean Air Cycle will take place on the first day of Bike Week 2021 as part of The World’s Biggest Bike Ride. Bike Week is organised each year by Cycling UK, an independent organisation that encourages people to join in events, rethink their everyday journeys, and switch to cycling as the most convenient way to get around.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will not be encouraging a mass meet-up of riders at a designated starting point. Instead, all participants will be able to complete the cycle ride at any point on Sunday 30 May. This means that everybody will be able to join The Camden Clean Air Cycle safely and at their own pace.
We have selected a route that will take cyclists all around the Borough of Camden, past all the beautiful landmarks that make our Borough so wonderful. The route is a figure of eight, meaning riders can start anywhere along it and complete the route as quickly or as slowly as they like. The total route is just under 25km (approx. 16 miles).
To make the ride even more enjoyable, you can stop off along the way at our partner coffee shops for refreshments. Partner bike shops along the way will also be signposted so you can stop for bike maintenance if needed, or choose to start the ride at their store if you are hiring a bike. Just look out for the Camden Clean Air Cycle Ride poster in their windows!
We would like all riders to wear something BLUE either on themselves or their bikes. The crazier the better!
Take lots of photos of yourself or your group before you start or along the way and use the hashtag #thecamdencleanaircycle so we can see them. We will then post them on this page and our social platforms.
Times and Medals
Doing it for fun? No problem! If, however, you want to challenge yourself or compete against a friend, then time yourself and send it to us at firstname.lastname@example.org along with a selfie and we will add it to our leader board.
Everyone who takes part will receive an eco-friendly medal! Simply go to one of the cafes or bike shops involved in the race, show them your ticket, and they will then give you your medal. See the full list here.
Ride with an Air Quality Monitor
Camden Clean Air and PPL PWR have come together to create the Community Air Pollution Sensor (CAPS) Project. PPL PWR is developing lightweight and portable air quality sensors for schools around the Borough. You can read more about the project here.
We are looking for riders to help us trial the sensors! The Camden Clean Air Cycle is a perfect opportunity for us to attach the sensors to bikes and track the air quality around the Borough while testing the accuracy of the data on the move.
