Southampton has committed itself to a Clean Air Strategy from 2016 to 2025 and has already seen great successes.

One such success is the air cleaning busses which began in September 2018. The busses are fitted with a filter system on their roof that removes particulate air pollution and blows out pure air behind it. The filter is made in an engine barrier-type filter construction and designed to remove up to 99.5% of particles from the air without any impact on the passenger or travel experience.

PM10 particles, which are less than 10 micrometres in diameter, are associated with many health problems including asthma. Road traffic is among the main causes of the pollution. Southampton was chosen for the trial because the World Health Organisation revealed it had reached its limit of unsafe air pollution.

The trial saw such success that the filters are now being installed onto more ‘Bluestar’ busses in Southampton and across 6 other regions in the UK.

Success stories such as this one inspire us to bring about similar change to Camden.
